No post yesterday...blah blah blah...gomen nasai...yadda yadda yadda...right got that out of the way then. Apologies if i'm a little terse today, not slept since Tuesday and i'm in the tetchy phase now (grumble moan)...which may explain the almost inexplicable levels of irritation i'm now feeling towards todays subject...which is the blatantly incorrect or perverted use of phrases or sayings that used to actually have some meaning...eh? I hear you all say..."what the fuck is he banging on about now?"...allow me to explain.
There are a lot of these...some still fine for general use despite their irrelevance...some mildly irritating...some fucking annoying. I'm going to pick on the one that's got on my nerves as I think it's a good example...the phrase 'stop press'. Now to those of you unfamiliar with the world of printing i'll give you a quick background here...getting anything litho printed is expensive (although nowhere near as much as it used to be) there's a huge amount of setup time involved in even the tiniest of jobs and once it's all together and the presses are running suddenly deciding that you've got something incredibly important that *must* go on there and that needs the presses to be stopped, everything binned, everything re-setup and restarted is an unbelievably expensive prospect...hence the importance traditionally attached to the phrase 'stop press', when you saw something with that on it you knew that, whatever it was, it was fucking important because someone had decided that this information was so crucial that they were willing to sacrifice anything from £1,000's to £10,000's of their money to have it included...wow!
And what should land on my desk this morning? Amongst the flotsam and jetsam of irritating junk mail was some tossy piece of badly designed detritus...and on the cover, clearly placed there at the beginning of the 'design' and not, as would actually be the case, hastily overlaid onto the existing design are the words 'stop press'...and what is so earth shatteringly important that it deserves a 'stop press'? they've got a cheap shredder for sale...right...so that warranted a 'stop press' did it...the hamfisted spong who claims to be able to use Quark and who clearly just subjects it to all forms of DTP buggery and who is responsible for some of the most truly ghastly pieces of aesthetic effluence ever to grace my desk just left that big custom sized shape blank did he?...and as this insufferable shit was going through the presses some bright spark said "fuck! we've only gone and missed that £10 shredder off the cover...bollocks! oh well best stop the presses eh? the massive revenue we'll get from such a cheap piece of shit will clearly cover the £50,000 i'm about to cost this company"...hhhhhmmmmmmm I think not...but then I think i'm probably just being ever so slightly pedantic here...irritates the fuck out of me though.
